Three Different Questions Hide Inside an Age Comparison
An age comparison can ask at least three things. The first is the permanent calendar interval between two dates of birth. The second is each person's exact age on a shared date. The third is the difference between their completed-year labels on that date. These answers are related, but they are not interchangeable.
Suppose one person is 8 years and 5 months older. During part of every year, the displayed whole-number ages can differ by 9 because the older birthday has occurred and the younger birthday has not. Nothing about the birth dates changed. The apparent extra year comes from truncating two ages at different points in their birthday cycles.
Build the Exact Gap From Calendar Anniversaries
Start with the earlier date and count complete annual anniversaries that do not pass the later date. From the last anniversary, count complete calendar months, with no more than 11 months in the remainder stage. Finally, count the days between the month cursor and the later birth. This gives a readable years-months-days decomposition.
Calendar decomposition is not the same as dividing total days by 365 or 30. Years can contain 365 or 366 days, and months range from 28 to 31. An exact decomposition needs a stated month-end and February 29 convention; decimal years and months are useful only when they are clearly labeled approximations.

Count Total Days Without Letting Clock Changes Interfere
Civil dates should be compared as date ordinals. Convert each selected year, month, and day into a midnight UTC ordinal, then subtract the earlier ordinal from the later one. Consecutive dates differ by one even when a daylight-saving transition makes the local interval between two midnights 23 or 25 hours.
A 3,090-day result counts date boundaries under the usual exclusive-end interval. It does not prove an exact 74,160-hour difference because the form has no birth time, timezone, comparison time, or historical clock record.

Measure Both People on One Shared Comparison Date
A fair current-age comparison uses one as-of date for both people. For each birth date, count completed anniversaries to that shared date, then complete months and remaining days. If the comparison date precedes either birth, a current-age snapshot does not exist and should be rejected rather than silently reversed.
The snapshot supports historical questions as well as today's ages. Set it to a graduation, photograph, family event, school cutoff, or another documented day to see how old both people were then. Moving the snapshot changes each age and next birthday but never changes the fixed interval between the two dates of birth.
Handle February 29 as a Visible Assumption
The Gregorian calendar includes February 29 in years divisible by four, except century years not divisible by 400. A person born on that date has no identical month-day anniversary in a common year. A calculator must either expose its convention or risk hiding a choice inside the result.
February 28 and March 1 are both used in different arithmetic, cultural, administrative, or legal settings. Apply one selected convention consistently to completed ages, next birthdays, and any years-months-days decomposition that crosses the missing date. For benefits, school entry, legal capacity, or another consequential threshold, use the rule published for that exact program and jurisdiction.
Work Through a Full Birth-Date Comparison
For April 10, 1990 and September 25, 1998, eight anniversaries lead to April 10, 1998. Five complete calendar months lead to September 10, followed by 15 days. The exact gap is 8 years, 5 months, and 15 days. Date ordinals independently produce 3,090 days, or 441 complete weeks and 3 days.
On August 10, 2026, the earlier-born person is 36 years and 4 months old. The later-born person is 27 years, 10 months, and 16 days old. Their completed-year ages differ by 9 on that date. After the September 25 birthday, the whole-year difference returns to 8, while the exact 8-year, 5-month, 15-day birth-date gap remains unchanged.
