What Is a GPA Calculator

Choose the Correct GPA Scale Before Entering Grades

A letter is not a universal numeric value. On this page, the common 4.0 preset maps A and A+ to 4.0, A- to 3.7, B+ to 3.3, and continues through F at 0. The 4.33 preset maps A+ to 4.33 and uses two-decimal plus and minus values. Those are transparent presets, not claims about a particular school.

Cornell documents a 4.3 scale, while Illinois publishes a 4.0 scale and uses its own transcript precision. Other institutions, high schools, graduate programs, and admissions offices may calculate differently. GPA Calculator Formula Guide

Quality points preserve credit weighting. A four-credit course contributes twice as much to GPA as a two-credit course with the same grade-point value. Add every included course's quality points, add its GPA credits, and divide the two totals. Do not average course letters or course grade points directly unless every course carries identical credits.

A cumulative projection first converts prior GPA back into prior quality points by multiplying it by prior GPA credits. The entered term quality points are added before dividing by combined credits. The target equation then solves for the average grade points required over future credits.

Term GPA, Cumulative GPA, and Major GPA Answer Different Questions

Term GPA covers one academic period. Cumulative GPA combines included work across multiple terms. A major or program GPA may include only designated courses, while an institution GPA may exclude transfer work. The same student can therefore have several valid GPA values with different course populations.

Keep the label and credit population attached to every result. Do not combine a cumulative GPA with attempted credits that belong to a different definition, and do not treat the projected value as an official recalculation when an institution truncates, replaces grades, or computes separate career-level records.

Credit weighting measures both performance and course weight. Suppose a student earns A in a three-credit course and B in a four-credit course on the common 4.0 preset. The A contributes 12 quality points, the B contributes 12, and the term GPA is 24 divided by 7, or about 3.429. A simple average of 4 and 3 would incorrectly report 3.5.

Plan a Target GPA Without Hiding Feasibility

The target result is a required average across the future credits entered, not a promise about a particular set of letter grades. If the required value is above the selected scale maximum, the target cannot be reached within that credit window under the model. More future credits, a different target, or a stronger entered term changes the equation.

The calculator also reports the lowest and highest possible cumulative GPA after those future credits using zero and the selected scale maximum as boundaries. Those bounds make an impossible target visible and help prevent a required average such as 4.72 from being presented as though it were an ordinary attainable GPA on a 4.0 scale.

GPA Calculator Examples

For three courses worth 3, 4, and 3 credits with grades A, B+, and A- on the common 4.0 preset, the quality points are 12.0, 13.2, and 11.1. Their 36.3 total quality points divided by 10 credits produce a 3.630 term GPA.

If a student previously had a 3.20 GPA over 60 credits, that record represents 192 quality points. Adding the 36.3-point term produces 228.3 quality points over 70 credits, or a projected cumulative GPA of about 3.261. Reaching 3.50 after another 30 credits would require an average above 4.0, so the selected window is not feasible on that scale.

Pass/Fail, Transfer, Repeated, and Excluded Courses Need Policy Checks

Courses can appear on a transcript without contributing grade points. Illinois states that credit/no-credit courses are not counted in GPA, and its GPA example excludes S and CR entries from GPA hours.
