A square footage calculator finds the two-dimensional area enclosed by a measured boundary and reports that area in square feet and other square units. This page supports rectangles, squares, right triangles, circles, trapezoids, and an L-shape represented by a rectangular corner cutout. It can multiply identical spaces, subtract a measured exclusion, and keep gross, net, and planned material area distinct.

The same geometry can support a room comparison, flooring takeoff, wall estimate, tile plan, landscaping note, or classroom check, but those uses do not share one automatic waste percentage. The calculator therefore asks for the allowance, rate, and package coverage rather than inventing them.

Choose a Shape That Matches the Boundary

A useful area result begins with a defensible geometric model. A rectangle needs two perpendicular dimensions. A square needs one side. A right triangle needs a base and a height that meet at 90 degrees. A circle needs radius, not diameter. A trapezoid needs two parallel bases and their perpendicular separation.

L-shape mode treats the space as one outer rectangle with a smaller rectangular corner removed. If a boundary has angled bays, curves, several recesses, columns, or disconnected parts, sketch it, divide it into simple regions, and preserve the subtotal for each region instead of forcing the outline into one convenient rectangle.

Keep Gross, Net, and Planned Area Separate

Gross area is the selected shape area multiplied by the number of identical spaces. Net area subtracts the combined deduction entered by the user. Planned material area applies the allowance percentage to net area, not to the removed section. Keeping all three values visible prevents an opening from receiving material allowance or a purchase estimate from being mistaken for the physical floor area.

A deduction should represent a measured area, not a guess from an assumed standard door, window, island, or fixture size. Whether an opening should be removed depends on the project: paint may exclude glazing, flooring may continue beneath an appliance, and a landlord's stated floor area may follow a different measurement standard.

Square Footage Formula Guide

Area measures square units, so converting a length factor requires squaring it. One foot is exactly 0.3048 meter, which makes one square foot exactly 0.09290304 square meter. Multiplying a square-foot answer by 0.3048 would be a length conversion and would be wrong for area.

The calculator evaluates the selected formula in the entered unit, converts the unrounded result to square meters, and derives each displayed unit independently. It does not convert a rounded square-foot display into the next row.

Measure an L-Shaped Room Without Double Counting

For a simple L-shaped outline, measure the full outer length and width as though the missing corner were filled. Then measure the length and width of that one rectangular cutout. Subtract the cutout area once. The cutout dimensions must each be smaller than the matching outer dimension, which the calculator validates.

An equally valid method divides the L into two non-overlapping rectangles and adds their areas. Both methods should agree when the sketch and measurements describe the same boundary. Comparing the subtraction and addition methods is a strong arithmetic check before materials are ordered.

Convert Square Feet, Square Meters, Yards, Inches, and Acres

The result includes square feet, square meters, square yards, square inches, square centimeters, hectares, and acres. One square yard is nine square feet because one yard is three feet in both dimensions. One hectare is 10,000 square meters. The acre row uses 43,560 square feet and the international-foot relationship used by the calculator.

NIST states that the international foot is exactly 0.3048 meter and that the former U.S. survey foot is obsolete except for historical and legacy work. Property records, surveys, and legal land descriptions may still have a stated datum or historical convention, so ordinary room calculations should not be silently substituted for a professional survey.

Plan Cost or Whole Packages From Current Product Data

Unit-rate mode converts planned material area into the selected pricing basis and multiplies by the entered rate. It is a material-only scenario unless the quoted rate already includes labor, preparation, delivery, tax, trim, adhesive, underlayment, or disposal. Label the source and date of the rate when comparing suppliers.

Package mode divides planned area by the coverage printed for one package and rounds upward because a fraction of a sealed package is not normally purchasable. It reports purchased coverage and coverage beyond the planned area. Verify usable coverage, pattern repeat, batch or dye-lot needs, breakage, cuts, returns, and minimum order rules with the actual product documentation.

Measurement Error Matters More Than Extra Decimal Places

A calculated area inherits uncertainty from the dimensions. NIST uses rectangle area as an example of uncertainty propagation: uncertainty in length and width both contribute to uncertainty in their product. A bowed wall, diagonal room, rounded corner, tape sag, rough endpoint, or rounded source dimension can matter more than the final calculator decimal.

Measure at the boundary relevant to the project, repeat questionable dimensions, and record the precision actually supported by the tool. Keep unrounded values during arithmetic, then round the reported result consistently with the measurements. More visible digits do not repair an inaccurate sketch or instrument.

A transparent takeoff makes assumptions inspectable. Another person can see which boundary was modeled, which measurements were used, whether repeated spaces were multiplied, what was removed, and where an allowance entered the calculation. That is more useful than a single square-foot total whose origin cannot be reproduced.

Accuracy, Privacy, and Important Limits

The arithmetic is deterministic for the selected ideal shape and entered values. It does not inspect a drawing, detect non-square corners, measure slopes, account for wall thickness, infer whether a deduction applies, or choose a material allowance. Boundary length excludes the effect of generic deductions because an area alone does not reveal their shape or position; trapezoid perimeter is omitted because the two nonparallel side lengths are not entered.
