What Is a Business Days Calculator
A business days calculator counts dates that are open under a defined weekly schedule, then removes exact closure dates such as holidays, substitute days, company shutdowns, or school closures. It answers a narrower question than a calendar-day counter because Saturday, Sunday, or any other configured closed weekday does not automatically contribute to the result.
There is no universal business-day calendar. A bank, court, employer, delivery carrier, school, and public agency can use different workweeks and closure rules. This calculator therefore makes the endpoint convention, recurring weekly pattern, and one-off closure list visible instead of hiding them behind a country label.
How to Use the Business Days Calculator
For a legal filing, benefit deadline, contract notice, payroll determination, or regulated service period, identify the controlling rule before selecting inputs. The tool performs the schedule arithmetic you specify; it does not decide which calendar or endpoint rule has legal authority.
- Enter the two calendar boundaries in either order. The result preserves the direction entered while counting from the chronological earlier date to the later date.
- Choose whether the earlier boundary and later boundary are included. Including both is useful for a staffed date range; excluding the trigger date may better match some elapsed-period rules.
- Select Monday-Friday, Sunday-Thursday, Monday-Saturday, or Custom. In Custom mode, list the weekday names that repeat as closed days.
- Add only exact closure dates that apply to the organization and scenario. Enter observed or substitute holidays separately from their nominal dates.
- Calculate, then compare scheduled workdays, closure exclusions, overlaps, out-of-range entries, period totals, and the first, last, previous, and next business dates.
Business Days Formula and Counting Method
The selected range is formed first. If an endpoint is excluded, the chronological boundary moves inward by one calendar date. The recurring schedule is then counted in complete seven-day blocks plus the remaining weekdays, so a long range does not require testing every individual date.
Exact closure dates are validated and deduplicated. A closure reduces the total only when it falls inside the selected range and lands on a scheduled open weekday. A closure already on a configured closed weekday is reported as an overlap rather than subtracted twice.

Endpoint Rules Can Change the Answer by Two Days
A range can include both boundaries, exclude both, include only the earlier date, or include only the later date. From Monday through Friday with no closures, including both produces five business days. Excluding the later Friday produces four; excluding the earlier Monday also produces four; excluding both produces three.
The controls apply to the chronological earlier and later dates even when the dates are entered backward. That rule keeps the arithmetic stable while the result separately reports whether the user entered a forward range, backward range, or the same date twice.

Choose a Workweek That Matches the Real Schedule
Monday-Friday is a common office schedule, but it is not a definition of business day. Sunday-Thursday models a Friday-Saturday weekend, Monday-Saturday represents a six-day operation, and Custom can mark any one to six recurring weekdays as closed. The result reports both the schedule label and number of open weekdays per week.
A recurring workweek is still simpler than a rotating roster. A 4-on/4-off shift, alternating Friday schedule, seasonal opening pattern, or hours-based service agreement cannot be represented by one fixed weekly closure set. Those cases need a roster-specific system rather than a weekday counter.
Holiday, Observed-Day, and Closure Handling
Enter closures as unambiguous YYYY-MM-DD dates. The calculator does not automatically move a Saturday holiday to Friday or a Sunday holiday to Monday because substitute-day rules differ by jurisdiction, employer, schedule, and employee status. Add the observed date that actually closes the relevant organization.
The result audits the list instead of silently accepting it. Duplicate dates count once. A closure outside the selected range is reported but does not change the total. A closure inside the range on an already closed weekday appears as an overlap, while an in-range scheduled workday closure is subtracted exactly once.
- Public or bank holiday dates that apply to the location and institution.
- Observed or substitute dates when the actual closure differs from the named holiday date.
- Company shutdowns, school closures, maintenance days, or carrier-specific non-service days.
- Emergency closures only when the affected organization confirms that the date should not count.
Business Days Calculator Examples
Example 1: July 1 through July 31, 2026, including both boundaries, contains 23 scheduled Monday-Friday workdays. If July 3 is an applicable closure, the result is 22 business days. Entering July 4 as well does not reduce the total again because July 4 falls on Saturday under that schedule.
Example 2: The same July range under a Sunday-Thursday schedule contains a different distribution of open weekdays. A Friday closure overlaps a recurring closed day, while a Sunday closure can reduce the total because Sunday is scheduled open.
Example 3: Monday through Friday with both endpoints excluded selects Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. If Wednesday is an entered closure, the final result is two business days. The period table exposes the scheduled count and closure subtraction separately.
How to Read the Business-Day Results
Scheduled workdays before closures show what the repeating workweek contributes. Closure dates excluded show the one-off dates that actually reduced that number. Non-business dates combine recurring closed weekdays and effective closures. The business-day share compares the final total with every selected calendar date; it is descriptive, not a productivity measure.
The first and last business dates identify usable endpoints inside the selected range. Previous and next business dates search outside the chronological boundaries under the same schedule and exact closure list. The month, year, or century table changes resolution for long intervals so the page remains inspectable without generating thousands of daily rows.

It supports years 0001 through 9999 and uses civil-date ordinals so daylight-saving clock changes do not add or remove a calendar date. It does not model times of day, time zones, half-days, opening hours, rotating shifts, or historical calendar reforms.
Calculations run in the browser. Dates can still reveal personal, employment, medical, or legal context, so use neutral sample values when the real dates are sensitive.
