CDC Adult BMI Categories and Obesity Classes

CDC uses the same standard BMI categories for adults age 20 and older regardless of age, sex, or race: underweight below 18.5, healthy weight from 18.5 to less than 25, overweight from 25 to less than 30, and obesity at 30 or higher. Obesity is divided into Classes 1, 2, and 3.

The calculator classifies with the full-precision BMI before rounding. A value just below 25 therefore remains in the healthy-weight category even if a one-decimal display appears as 25.0. Worked BMI Example With Category Boundaries

For an adult weighing 70 kg at 175 cm, height is 1.75 m and height squared is 3.0625 m2. Dividing 70 by 3.0625 gives 22.857, displayed as 22.9. The unrounded value falls between 18.5 and 25, so the CDC category is healthy weight.

At 1.75 m, the BMI 18.5 boundary corresponds to about 56.7 kg and the BMI 25 boundary to about 76.6 kg. This is a mathematical weight interval for that BMI category, not a personalized target. If waist is 85 cm, the separate waist-to-height ratio is 85 / 175 = 0.486.

Benefits and Limits of Height-Specific BMI Boundaries

The result reverses the BMI formula to show the weights that meet each category boundary at the entered height. This is useful for checking another calculator, understanding how close a value is to a numerical boundary, and avoiding generic weight charts that use a different height.

The interval labeled BMI 18.5 to less than 25 is not an instruction to move toward its midpoint or either edge. Body composition, medical history, pregnancy, medications, disability, recent illness, weight history, laboratory findings, fitness, and personal circumstances are not in the equation. A clinician can interpret those factors together.

Optional Waist-to-Height Ratio Context

Waist-to-height ratio adds information about central adiposity that BMI cannot provide. NICE recommends considering it alongside BMI for adults with BMI below 35. Measure the waist midway between the bottom of the ribs and top of the hips after breathing out naturally, then divide by height using the same units.

NICE describes 0.4 to 0.49 as healthy central adiposity, 0.5 to 0.59 as increased central adiposity, and 0.6 or more as high central adiposity. A ratio below 0.4 is reported without assigning the healthy label. At BMI 35 or higher, NICE says waist-to-height ratio adds limited predictive value because a high ratio is already likely.

  • Leave waist blank when you only want BMI.
  • Use centimetres with centimetres or inches with inches; the units cancel in the ratio.
  • Do not use the optional ratio to diagnose diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular disease.
  • Pregnancy and situations where waist measurement is inappropriate require different assessment.

BMI Prime and Ponderal Index

BMI Prime divides BMI by 25, the lower boundary of the CDC overweight category. A BMI Prime of 1.00 is therefore the BMI 25 boundary; 0.92 means the BMI is 92% of that numerical boundary. It is a normalized comparison, not a health probability.

The ponderal index divides kilograms by height cubed rather than height squared. The calculator includes it as a reproducible secondary body-size index, not as a replacement diagnosis or a claim that one index resolves BMI's limitations.

Measurement Quality and Rounding Near a Boundary

A BMI result cannot be more reliable than the height and weight entered. Use a level scale, light clothing, and a stable standing-height measurement when possible. Recheck surprising results rather than changing a health decision because of one self-reported value.

Category boundaries use the unrounded calculation. For example, 24.96 displays as 25.0 to one decimal place but is still below 25. The result explicitly shows the underlying category rule and nearest boundary so a rounded display does not silently change interpretation.

Why BMI Does Not Measure Body Fat or Individual Health

CDC explains that BMI cannot distinguish fat mass from muscle and bone or show where fat is located. A muscular adult may have a high BMI without the same body composition as another adult at that BMI. An older adult can also have a BMI in the healthy-weight category while having low muscle mass or other risk factors.
