Mass and Weight Are Related but Not Identical

Mass describes an object's inertial property or quantity of matter. The kilogram is the SI unit of mass. In physics, weight is a force produced when gravity acts on mass, so force depends on local gravitational acceleration and is measured in newtons in SI work.

Everyday labels and commercial scales commonly use the word weight while reporting kilograms or pounds as mass. This page accepts that familiar search language, but its arithmetic remains a mass-unit conversion. It does not calculate newtons, pounds-force, buoyancy, apparent mass, or a change in gravity.

The Kilogram Bridge and Conversion Formula

Each supported unit has a defined factor in kilograms. The engine first multiplies the entered value by the source factor, preserving an unrounded kilogram quantity. It then divides that quantity by the target factor. Converting the target result back through the same factors must reproduce the source value apart from display rounding.

A direct factor shown in the result is the source kilogram factor divided by the target kilogram factor. The two-stage route and the direct route are algebraically equivalent; showing both makes the relationship easier to audit.

Metric Mass Units and Significant Digits

The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass, but prefixed mass-unit names are formed from gram: microgram, milligram, gram, and kilogram. One kilogram is 1,000 grams; one gram is 1,000 milligrams; and one milligram is 1,000 micrograms. One tonne is exactly 1,000 kilograms.

The practical metric row selects a readable scale for the entered quantity. Displaying more digits can reduce visible rounding, but it cannot repair an imprecise scale reading. Report only the precision justified by the source measurement and the purpose.

Avoirdupois and Troy Ounces Must Stay Separate

The ordinary avoirdupois system used for most goods defines one pound as 16 ounces. One avoirdupois ounce equals 28.349523125 grams. The troy system used for precious metals defines one troy pound as 12 troy ounces, and one troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams.

Both systems share the 64.79891-milligram grain, but they group grains differently: 437.5 grains make an avoirdupois ounce, while 480 grains make a troy ounce. A troy ounce is therefore about 9.7% heavier than an avoirdupois ounce. The calculator labels troy results as oz t and pounds as lb t to prevent a silent substitution.

Short Tons, Metric Tonnes, and Long Tons

The word ton is incomplete without a system. A US short ton is 2,000 avoirdupois pounds, or 907.18474 kilograms. A metric tonne is exactly 1,000 kilograms. An Imperial long ton is 2,240 pounds, or 1,016.0469088 kilograms.

Those differences matter in freight, commodities, equipment capacity, and project estimates. Preserve the original label in records and contracts; do not shorten all three to ton when another person must reproduce the calculation.

Use a density calculation when the source is volumetric, and verify temperature, composition, packing, or concentration when those conditions affect density. This calculator deliberately excludes volume units so an unstated material assumption cannot masquerade as a conversion factor.

Accuracy, Rounding, and Trust Notes

For valid inputs, the conversion is deterministic and the reverse row checks the same unrounded value. Factors follow NIST mass relationships and SI definitions.
