What Is a Unit Converter
A unit converter expresses one measured quantity in another compatible unit without changing the quantity itself. Ten meters and about 32.8084 feet describe the same length; the numerical value changes because the size of one unit changes. Length can convert to length, mass to mass, and volume to volume, but a length cannot be converted directly into an area or a mass.
This converter covers eight measurement types and keeps ambiguous systems visible. U.S. liquid and Imperial gallons are separate choices, decimal megabytes and binary mebibytes are separate choices, and temperature readings use scale-and-offset equations rather than an ordinary multiplication factor.
How to Use the Unit Converter
Use the system name printed in the option. A bare gallon, pint, cup, fluid ounce, kilobyte, or megabyte can be ambiguous when the original source does not identify its convention.
- Choose the measurement type that describes the quantity, such as length, mass, temperature, volume, or digital data.
- Enter the numerical value. Signed decimals and scientific notation are accepted when the browser can represent the value as a finite number.
- Select the source unit and target unit from the compatible lists. Use Swap units to reverse the direction without re-entering the value.
- Choose 4 to 12 displayed significant digits. This changes visible rounding, not the stored factors used in the calculation.
- Select Convert units, then read the headline together with the factor or temperature method, base-unit value, reverse check, and equivalence table.
What the Conversion Result Shows
The main result is accompanied by the original amount, measurement type, complete unit names and symbols, selected display precision, conversion factor or temperature method, base-unit value, and a reverse calculation back to the source unit. The reverse check should reproduce the entered value within displayed rounding.
The equivalence table converts the same entered amount into every supported unit in the category. Its last column shows either the target amount per one source unit or, for temperature, the equivalent Celsius reading. This makes the table useful for comparison without implying that every displayed digit came from the original measurement.
Linear Unit Conversion Formula
Length, mass, area, volume, speed, time, and data conversions use a common base-unit path. Each source unit has a factor to the category base unit, and each target unit has a factor from that same base. Carrying the base value internally prevents a separate hand-written formula for every possible pair.

Temperature Conversion Uses Scale and Offset
A temperature reading is not generally a simple ratio. Zero degrees Celsius and zero degrees Fahrenheit refer to different physical temperatures, so the calculation first converts the reading to kelvin and then converts kelvin to the requested scale. Rankine uses the Fahrenheit-sized degree but begins at absolute zero.
Absolute zero is 0 K, equal to -273.15 degrees Celsius and -459.67 degrees Fahrenheit. The calculator rejects a temperature below that boundary. A temperature difference is a different question: a change of 1 kelvin equals a change of 1 degree Celsius, while a change of 1 degree Fahrenheit equals 5/9 kelvin.

Mass Is Not the Same Quantity as Force
The category is labeled Mass because kilograms, grams, pounds, ounces, stones, and tonnes represent mass in this tool. Everyday speech often calls a person's mass weight, but scientific weight is a force produced by gravity and is measured in newtons in SI. Converting kilograms to pounds here does not calculate gravitational force.
The pound and ounce choices are avoirdupois units used for ordinary mass. They are not troy ounces used for precious metals, and the U.S. short ton is not the same as the metric tonne or Imperial long ton. The full unit name in the result provides the needed context.
U.S. Liquid and Imperial Volume Units Differ
One U.S. liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters, while one Imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters. Their pints and fluid ounces also differ. Selecting an unlabeled gallon from a recipe, fuel record, product specification, or historical source can therefore produce a material error.
The volume list names U.S. and Imperial units explicitly. A U.S. customary cup is shown as 236.5882365 milliliters; a recipe may instead define a metric cup as 250 milliliters. Use the convention stated by the recipe or authority rather than treating every informal cup as identical.
Decimal and Binary Data Units Are Separate
SI decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000: 1 kB is 1,000 bytes, 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes, and 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. IEC binary prefixes use powers of 1,024: 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes, and 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Older software and informal documentation sometimes use KB or MB while intending a binary quantity. This converter does not guess. Select the decimal symbol printed by the source or the explicit binary unit KiB, MiB, GiB, or TiB. Bits and bytes are also distinct: one byte equals eight bits.

Significant Digits and Rounding
A defined conversion factor can be exact while the measured input is approximate. Converting a board recorded as 36 feet does not prove that its length was measured to infinitely many decimal places. NIST guidance recommends rounding the converted value consistently with the precision and possible rounding error of the original value.
The displayed-precision control uses significant digits rather than a fixed number of decimal places. This preserves useful scale for both very small and very large values. Keep more digits during intermediate work, then report only the precision justified by the source measurement, instrument, specification, or assignment.

The converter validates that both units belong to one category, rejects nonfinite values and impossible absolute temperatures, and performs a reverse check. It does not estimate measurement uncertainty, calibrate an instrument, or decide which convention an unlabeled source intended.
