What Is a Grade Calculator
A grade calculator models how scored work contributes to a course percentage. It can combine percentage-weighted categories, divide total points earned by total points possible, or solve the score needed on a final exam. Those methods answer related questions, but they are not interchangeable.

Choose the Correct Grade Calculation Method
The most common grade-calculation error is using the right arithmetic for the wrong grading system. A 100-point project does not automatically carry twice the course weight of a 50-point quiz when the syllabus assigns both to separately weighted categories. Conversely, inventing percentage weights for a pure points course changes the instructor's calculation.

Weighted Grade Formula Guide
Convert each percentage weight to a decimal, multiply it by the assessment score, and add the contributions. If the entered weights total less than 100%, the completed-work grade is normalized by dividing the accumulated course points by the entered weight. The unentered percentage becomes the remaining course weight for target planning.
For example, a score of 92% carrying 30% of the course contributes 27.6 course points. It does not contribute 92 points and should not be averaged equally with a category carrying a different weight.

Points-Based Grade Formula Guide
In a points course, each earned point has the same value. Add earned points, add possible points, and divide. A 90-point result on a 100-point exam affects the course ten times as much as a 9-point result on a 10-point quiz because the exam contributes ten times as many possible points.
To plan remaining work, first add its possible points to the course denominator. Multiply that projected denominator by the target percentage, then subtract points already earned. The remainder is the number of future points needed.

Final Exam Score Formula
Final-exam mode treats the current grade as the normalized grade for everything completed before the exam. The completed share is 100% minus the final's weight. Multiplying the current grade by that completed share gives the course points already represented; the final must supply the difference between those points and the target.
This setup is appropriate only when the displayed current grade excludes the ungraded final and correctly summarizes all earlier work. If the gradebook already counts the final as zero, use the instructor's current-grade view or reconstruct the course in weighted or points mode.

Current Grade and Final Course Grade Are Not Always the Same
A current grade commonly describes performance on work graded so far. A final or total grade can include every required assessment, including work that is ungraded or treated as zero. The distinction matters most early in a term, when a strong current percentage may represent only a small fraction of the course.
Canvas documentation, for example, distinguishes a current calculation based only on graded assignments from a total calculation across course assignments. Other systems and instructors may label or configure these views differently. Check what the displayed denominator includes before copying a number into final-exam mode.

What If the Entered Weights Do Not Total 100%
Weights below 100% are useful when some course work remains. The calculator reports both the weighted course points already represented and a normalized current grade across only the entered portion. It then treats the gap to 100% as one combined remaining-work average for target scenarios.
Weights above 100% are rejected because they cannot describe shares of one ordinary course total. If a syllabus lists category weights that appear to exceed 100%, check whether bonus work is separate, whether alternative assessment paths apply, or whether the percentages belong to different grading periods.
Extra Credit, Dropped Scores, Curves, and Rounding
The engine accepts assessment scores above 100% up to a controlled limit so an already-awarded bonus can be represented. It also shows when a target would require more than 100% on remaining work, but that does not mean such extra credit exists. Only include bonus points or percentages authorized by the course policy.
Dropped assignments, replacement exams, lowest-score rules, curves, late penalties, category caps, and instructor overrides must be applied before entry or checked afterward. Dropping the lowest percentage is not always equivalent to dropping the item that most improves a points-based category. Keep full precision during planning and apply the official rounding rule only at the reporting stage.

Letter-Grade Bands Are Illustrations, Not Universal Rules
The result panel may show a familiar 90/80/70/60 letter-band interpretation to help users read a percentage. It is labeled illustrative because schools and instructors use different cutoffs, plus and minus grades, pass thresholds, mastery levels, and rounding rules.
A calculated 89.96% is not automatically an A, and a 70% is not automatically passing. Use the exact grading scale printed in the current syllabus or official course policy. This page does not convert its illustrative band into an academic-status decision.
