Translate the Sentence Into Part, Whole, Rate, and Unknown

Identify the quantities before choosing a formula. In 'What is 20% of 150?', the base is 150, the rate is 20%, and the part is unknown. In '30 is what percent of 150?', the rate is unknown. In '30 is 20% of what?', the whole is unknown.

All three use part = whole x rate. The unknown determines which operation to reverse, so label the quantities before calculating.

  • Whole: the reference amount equal to 100%.
  • Rate: the parts-per-hundred relationship.

Solve Forward Percentages and Recover a Missing Whole

To find P% of X, divide P by 100 and multiply by X. To find what percentage X represents of Y, divide X by Y and multiply by 100. To recover a whole from a known part and rate, divide the part by the rate written as a decimal.

Check the result in reverse. A percentage amount divided by its base should reproduce the rate; a recovered whole multiplied by the rate should reproduce the known part.

Equal percentage movements do not cancel in sequence. A 20% increase takes 100 to 120; a 20% decrease then removes 24 and leaves 96 because the base changed.

Percentage difference compares peer values with no natural baseline. It divides their absolute difference by their average magnitude, so swapping X and Y keeps the result unchanged.

Subtracting the rate from the final value uses the wrong base. After a 100% decrease, every original becomes zero, so the original cannot be recovered.

Relative change divides that 1-point movement by the 4% starting rate, giving 25%. Always report the unit beside the number.
