Build the Route Before Calculating Fuel

Route arithmetic comes before fuel arithmetic. The page treats the distance field as one-way distance. A round trip doubles that value, repeated trips multiply the complete one-way or round-trip plan, and the route allowance is applied last. This ordering prevents a user from adding a detour percentage to only one leg or forgetting that the return journey also consumes fuel.

Use a mapped route, odometer record, dispatch plan, or other traceable distance. If the distance already contains local errands, diversions, or the return leg, do not add them again. For routes with materially different legs, calculate each leg separately or use a weighted fuel-consumption record instead of pretending every segment is identical.

Match US MPG, Imperial MPG, km/L, and L/100 km

Fuel economy units do not all move in the same direction. A higher MPG or km/L value means the vehicle travels farther on one unit of fuel. A lower L/100 km value means the vehicle uses fewer liters to travel the fixed 100-kilometer distance. The calculator normalizes the selected basis internally before reporting every equivalent.

Natural Resources Canada gives the reciprocal relationships 235.21 divided by L/100 km for US MPG and 282.48 divided by L/100 km for Imperial MPG. The page uses more precise gallon and distance constants internally, so displayed equivalents can differ slightly from a conversion performed with rounded handbook constants.

Fuel Cost Formula and Unit Guide

The core calculation is fuel needed multiplied by fuel price. The important work is making the fuel volume compatible with the price volume. When efficiency is entered as US MPG and price is per liter, for example, the calculator converts the US gallons consumed to liters before applying the price. It never treats a US gallon, Imperial gallon, and liter as interchangeable labels.

The international mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers. A US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters, and an Imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters. Every route, fuel, and price equivalent is derived from those relationships before display rounding.

Why US and Imperial Gallons Must Stay Labeled

A vehicle rated at 40 Imperial MPG is not using the same gallon basis as one rated at 40 US MPG. Because the Imperial gallon contains about 20% more volume, the same physical fuel consumption receives a numerically larger Imperial MPG figure. Mixing an Imperial vehicle rating with a US price per gallon understates fuel use and cost unless the gallon systems are converted.

The same caution applies when a trip crosses markets or information comes from different sources. Keep the rating label from the vehicle record and the volume label from the pump price. The calculator can combine different systems because it normalizes both, but it cannot infer which gallon an unlabeled source intended.

Estimate Real-World Fuel Use Without Hiding Uncertainty

Official vehicle ratings provide a standardized comparison, not a guarantee for one trip. The US Environmental Protection Agency notes that traffic, speed, terrain, weather, vehicle load, tire pressure, maintenance, and driving behavior can change actual mileage. Separate Fuel Cost, Other Trip Costs, and Shared Cost

Fuel-only cost answers a vehicle-consumption question. Tolls, parking, ferries, congestion charges, or other entered amounts belong on a separate line because they do not change fuel volume. Keeping them separate lets the same route be recalculated when the pump price changes without disguising a fixed charge as fuel consumption.

The traveler field divides the complete entered budget equally. It does not determine a legally or socially appropriate reimbursement and it does not allocate wear, depreciation, insurance, finance, maintenance, lodging, food, or time unless those items are deliberately entered in the other-cost total.
