Classify the Unrounded Adult Result
CDC categories for adults age 20 and older use exact boundaries: below 18.5, 18.5 to less than 25, 25 to less than 30, and 30 or higher. Obesity is further divided at 35 and 40. These categories do not change by adult age, sex, or race in the CDC table.
A displayed value can conceal which side of a boundary the exact result occupies. If BMI is 24.96, one-decimal formatting shows 25.0, but the exact value is still below 25. Reverse a BMI Boundary Into Weight Without Prescribing a Target
Rearrange BMI = weight / height squared to obtain weight = BMI x height squared. At 1.75 m, the BMI 18.5 boundary is about 56.7 kg and BMI 25 begins near 76.6 kg. The same method produces the weight at 30, 35, and 40 for the category table.
